Music Therapy Clinic
Music is critical in attaining a state of equilibrium according to Indian philosophy. Music therapy is based on, and is aimed towards the attainment of bodily and mental equilibrium. The origins of Indian Classical Music can be traced back to the Vedic ages. The healing power of music has since long been harnessed by Ayurveda to bring about holistic healing in individuals. The effect of Music on a person's health has been thought to be due to changes in the neurochemical system and is currently being studied by a number of neuroscientists around the world.
Music Therapy practised in this clinic is based on Hindustani Classical Music. Before prescribing the necessary Music therapy, the patient is studied from both a physiological and behavioural point of view. The Prakriti of that individual is determined using a Nadi Pariksha (pulse test) and then the Music Therapy is composed and administered. Music Therapy can be used for both curative as well as preventive purposes.

I started thinking about Music Therapy while learning, teaching and composing music. To further my understanding, I interacted with medical professionals and had the opportunity to study EEGs (Electroencephalography). The effect of any external stimuli on the brain has been studied extensively by brain mapping using EEG. Signals in the brain are transmitted using brain waves. These brain waves are then responsible for biochemical modulations which cause changes in the physiology of humans. Music has always been observed to alter a person's mental and physical health. I was very much intrigued by the prescriptive nature of Hindustani classical music. Certain ragas must be ideally sung or heard in specific seasons and specific times. The prescriptive nature of Indian Classical Music further encouraged me to think about and study the role of musical sound in a person's well-being. So besides learning music, I attended several lectures, seminars and workshops. I also completed a course in Music Therapy.
In today's times of increasing unrest and uncertainty, stress and feelings of inadequacy have been found to play a major role in causing a number of health issues like high blood pressure, premature aging and other cardiovascular diseases. Music therapy aims to combat those issues by having a calming effect and restoring balance in the human body and mind. In addition, Music has a positive effect on happiness and has been found to improve concentration.
Some of the projects I have worked on are;
1. A school run by a trust for physically and mentally handicapped children:
a. To treat Learning disability
b. Improving concentration
2. People suffering from:
a. Diabetes
b. Arthritis
c. Blood Pressure
d. Parkinson's
e. Autism
f. Depression
g. Dementia
h. PCOD
3. A corporate institution looking to treat its employees for:
a. Increased involvement in work
b. Stress reduction
c. Behavioural changes for increased engagement
